NEW DELHI: The shifting of high-tension wires over the Ashram flyover extension has been completed and the stretch is now open for heavy vehicles. The loop from Sarai Kale Khan towards Lajpat Nagar is also likely to be ready in the next five days, Public Works Department (PWD) minister Atishi said on Monday.
The movement of heavy vehicles on the extended stretch was restricted as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of commuters in the vicinity of the high-tension wires, Atishi said. "With the assistance of the department concerned, PWD has successfully lifted the wires, allowing all vehicles to use this crucial route without any restriction." The completion of the loop will ensure better traffic management, resulting in a seamless and smooth travel experience for all commuters, she added.
The flyover extension was inaugurated by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on March 6. Its opening for heavy vehicles is expected to provide immense relief to lakhs of commuters who rely on this route daily as the travel time for commercial vehicles would also decrease significantly, improving efficiency and reducing congestion, Atishi pointed out.
"PWD, under the leadership of chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, is committed to enhance the city's infrastructure and address the needs of its growing population. By prioritising projects that improve traffic flow and reduce congestion, the department aims to provide efficient transportation options that positively impact the daily lives of residents and businesses alike."
The construction of the 1.4km flyover extension, which started in June 2020, was to be over within a year, but it got delayed due to the Covid-19 lockdown and the pollution ban. The Ashram flyover is one of the busiest sections in the city as Mathura Road and DND Flyway connect with it.
