NOIDA: The Noida-Delhi border at Chilla is likely to witness traffic snarls as the Noida Authority is planning to block one of the lanes of the Noida expressway for decorating it in preparation for the G20 summit scheduled for September.
The expressway, which connects the NCR city with Delhi, has four lanes in total, but narrows down to three at the border. If one of them is blocked, only two lanes will be open for traffic.
Anil Kumar Yadav, DCP (traffic), said they had received a letter from the Noida Authority, seeking permission for decoration work.
"The Authority plans to block 5ft of the road for decoration work. The rest of the space will be free for commuting. There is anyway a huge volume of traffic on this road during rush hours. The Authority's work may add to the congestion," he added.
The DCP clarified that the traffic police were yet to give their approval to the Authority's request.
Officials said the Authority was planning elaborate arrangements for a makeover of the road with murals, planters and projectors at different places.
Referring to the Authority's request, traffic inspector Ram Singh said that about 30 metres of the road on both sides of the Noida gate would be decorated with colourful lights, murals and planters. "This work may take about 20-30 days. The Authority has not mentioned when it wants to start the work. The police are likely to divert traffic on the DND Flyway and Kalindi Kunj if there is congestion during rush hours."
SP Singh, the in-charge of the Authority's traffic cell, could not be reached for a comment.
As part of its preparations for the G20 summit, the Authority has held several meetings with representatives of various departments- horticulture, civil, electrical engineering and public health-and directed them to repair, maintain and decorate major roads, intersections, entrances, and markets.
The horticulture department, for instance, is placing flower pots and beds along the Noida expressway and other locations.
