After the first seven rounds of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship, Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen is the clear leader in the title fight. Fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez is second in the standings, but Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso is now edging closer thanks to his consistent performance throughout the season. Perez didn't help his cause with a crash during qualifying at the most recent round in Monaco.
In the huge surprise of the season, Alonso has proven to be the biggest threat to the Red Bull duo. In his debut season with Aston Martin, he's already finished on the podium five times, taking third in each of the races run in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Australia, and Miami, and second in the Monaco Grand Prix.
After a strong start to the season, Ferrari is no longer showing as much pace, which hasn't been helped by drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz suffering some reliability issues and crashes early on. The Mercedes-Benz AMG team, which had been dominant in recent years, hasn't been able to turn around its lackluster performance, even with recent car upgrades. At times, though, the Mercedes have looked as fast as the Ferraris and Aston Martins, the latter also running Mercedes power units.
At the other end of the spectrum, McLaren's Oscar Piastri became the first of the season's three rookie drivers to score points. Piastri scored four points by finishing eighth in the third round, the Australian Grand Prix, and added to this in Monaco with an additional point. The other rookies are Williams' Logan Sargeant and AlphaTauri's Nyck De Vries.
