A DAY after a 21-year-old engineering student allegedly stabbed her 22-year-old boyfriend to death with a kitchen knife and injured herself in the incident, the police arrested her on Tuesday afternoon. A court remanded her in police custody for three days.
In the early hours of Monday, Yashwant Munde (22), who hailed from Latur district, was allegedly stabbed to death by his girlfriend Anuja Panhale (21), who is a native of Ahmednagar district. Anuja sustained a cut injury on her arm. The two were classmates pursuing their Bachelor of Technology (BTech) degree in Data Science and were in their second year at a privately run engineering and management institute located on the outskirts of the city.
For more than 24 hours after the incident, Panhale was receiving treatment at a hospital in Pune. “Panhale’s condition is stable now. She was placed under arrest on Tuesday afternoon. We will question her about the motive during the custodial remand. We will also speak to the family members of the two and others connected to them as part of the investigation,” said Senior Inspector Gajanan Pawar, in-charge, Lonikand police station.
“Panhale was produced before a court on Tuesday afternoon and was remanded in police custody for three days till June 1,” said Assistant Inspector Annasaheb Tapare, who is investigating the case.
The police said that the incident took place at the rented apartment of Munde in a residential complex in Wagholi, located near their college. Sometime before 6 am on Monday, Panhale was spotted by some residents of the building, standing in the ground floor space with an injury to her arm. She told the residents what had happened after which the police were informed.
Police have said that their probe suggests that Munde and Panhale were in a relationship for the last one and half years. “They had been having fights for a few days. In the early hours of Monday they had a heated argument when Panhale allegedly took a kitchen knife and stabbed Munde in the stomach. And also slashed him in the chest multiple times. She sustained an injury with the same knife. Munde bled to death before he was taken to a hospital,” Pawar had told The Indian Express earlier.
Police said that Panhale sustained injury on her wrist but they were not certain whether the injury she sustained was self-inflicted or she received it during the scuffle. Police said that the two had been studying together for the last few days at Munde’s rented apartment for their ongoing college exams.
