GURDASPUR: With an unwavering commitment to uphold the zero tolerance policy towards drug smugglers, the Gurdaspur police has taken a resolute step towards nurturing the potential of the youth in the border villages with the introduction of sporting activities.
A magnificent sporting spectacle that aims to captivate the hearts and minds of the vibrant and energetic young generation was seen during the Border Gurdaspur Trophy (Volleyball) 2023 edition, which was a riveting display of athleticism, passion, and camaraderie.
"This initiative is not merely a competition but a transformative journey that will redirect the energies of the young souls away from the treacherous path of drug trafficking and towards the path of glory through sports", said Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Dinanagar Aditya S Warrier.
At the initial stage , the competition commenced at the police station level, where teams from police stations Kalanaur, Dorangla, and Behrampur, engaged in fierce battles for supremacy. With unyielding determination, these valiant players left no stone unturned in their quest for victory, vying for the chance to advance to the next level.
As the intensity escalates, the tournament enters its second level, hosted at the police Line Gurdaspur. Here, the spotlight shines on the crème de la crème of village teams, including Thakurpur, Shamsherpur, Chauntra, Ghana, Srirampur, Galhari, Wazirpur, Dugri, Jainpur and Kushipur, the border villages which have seen considerable drone activities in the recent past.
A total of 170 youth hailing from 19 border villages participated in the week-long Border Gurdaspur Trophy tournament. These young athletes, driven by their shared love for the game, gathered on the volleyball court to showcase their skills, determination, and sportsmanship.
"In the face of drone activities that have cast a shadow over these villages, the participants in the Border Gurdaspur Trophy rise as beacons of hope, determined to leave a lasting impact not only in the realm of sports but also in reclaiming their sense of security, pride, and unity”, said the ASP.
The victorious teams of the Border Gurdaspur Trophy, along with their triumphant glory, will be commemorated within the display room at the Police Lines in Gurdaspur.
“This display room will serve as a space, showcasing the photographs and names of the winning teams, immortalizing their moments of triumph and their contribution to the tournament's legacy. With each passing year, this collection of photographs and names will grow, symbolizing the indomitable spirit of the border villages and the transformative power of sports” he said.
The participants were provided with volleyball kits, arming them with the necessary tools to unleash their potential on the court. Additionally, as a gesture of appreciation and unity, the participants were presented with complimentary t-shirts, symbolizing their collective identity and their shared journey towards combating drug abuse.
