    McLaren Tobias Sühlmann 2023

Tobias Sühlmann has held top design jobs at McLaren, Bentley and Aston Martin since 2018.

McLaren Automotive has appointed Bentley's Tobias Sühlmann to lead its design team, the U.K. sports-car maker said.

McLaren has been without a design director since Robert Melville left last June to join Saudi Arabian electric vehicle startup Ceer.

Sühlmann will start in September, McLaren said.

He will be succeeded at Bentley by Robin Page, who moves to the Volkswagen Group subsidiary from Volvo.

"Tobias is a highly experienced automotive designer with an existing understanding of McLaren," CEO Michael Leiters said in a statement. "Tobias will play a leading role in developing McLaren's new design language across our developing product portfolio."

Sühlmann was promoted to head of Bentley design in January this year following the promotion of his predecessor, Andreas Mindt, to lead design at Volkswagen passenger cars.

Sühlmann started his career at VW Group before moving to Aston Martin in 2018 to lead the brand's exterior design.

He moved to McLaren in 2020 as head of design for special projects, helping to shape the single-seat Solus GT, described by the company as ‘being as close to the experience and feel of driving a Formula One car as you can get."

Sühlmann moved to Bentley in 2021 to become head of exterior design.
