NASHIK: The celebration of V D Savarkar's 140th birth anniversary at Maharashtra Sadan in New Delhi has sparked a controversy, as the busts of reformist icons Ahilyabai Holkar and Savitribai Phule were removed to make space for a bust of the Hindutva ideologue, reports Tushar Pawar.
Former deputy CM and NCP MLA Chhagan Bhujbal on Monday said: "We do not have any reservations about celebrating Savarkar's birth anniversary. But, there was no need to remove the busts of Holkar and Phule. There is ample space at Maharashtra Sadan. Savarkar's bust could have been placed without removing the other two."
"Whatever happened was really disappointing," the NCP leader said, adding that the CM and the deputy CM must order an investigation and take action against those responsible. The event was attended by CM Eknath Shinde, his deputy Devendra Fadnavis, along with all Shiv Sena MPs.
