MANGALURU: The School of Social Work (SSW), Roshni Nilaya, in association with Centre for Leadership and Social Development (CLSD), Bengaluru and Roshni Alumni Association (RAA), will organise a symposium and the release of the book on the Founder Principal of School of Social Work – Dr Olinda Pereira at Roshni Nilaya in Mangaluru on May 31, at 3.30pm.
The book titled Legacy of a Legend – Dr Olinda Pereira, encapsulates the philanthropic work put in by a pioneer in social work education and practice. The book, highlighting the spirit of Dr Olinda Pereira, whose mission was to empower and enrich all those who had the good fortune of crossing paths with her, is the result of the work put in by Managing Trustees of Dr Olinda Pereira Memorial Trust, stated a release from Sophia N Fernandes, principal and Malini Hebbar, President, Roshni Alumni Association.
The Symposium will be inaugurated by Dr Vijaya Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Yenopoya (Deemed to be University) who will speak on the topic ‘Education and Development’. Fr Cedric Prakash will address the gathering on the topic ‘Social Transformation through Inclusive Society’. Philomena D’Sa, Founder Trustee will preside over the function. S N Gopinath, Founder Trustee, CLSD will highlight the Formation of the CLSD Trust and the making of the Book.
About Olinda Periera: Olinda took over in 1961 from Arline A’Hearn, DHM (a French religious congregation -Daughter of the Heart of Mary) from Canada, and steered the School of Social Work to great heights. The college is a pioneer institute of Social Work Education in the state of Karnataka. As one of the three DHM pioneers who started work in Kenya, Olinda lived in Nairobi from 1990 to 1994 Back in Mangalore in 1998, she established Vishwas, a Centre for the elderly, especially the house bound, lonely and neglected. Olinda had served as the principal of Roshni Nilaya for nearly two decades from the early 60’s.
