Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City police have taken up various activities, including interactions with college students, the public and youth meetings, to strengthen community policing.
City police commissioner Kuldeep Kumar R Jain told TOI that the department is reaching out to colleges to spread awareness on traffic and drug-related issues. Students are told about the importance of following traffic discipline and how people can be responsible on the road. Recently, the department organised a programme for medical students of a private college, that also included a question and answer session and the students mostly raised issues related to traffic and drugs.
“Awareness programmes in colleges will start in a big way from June. A station-wise strategy has been devised. Senior officers will also visit the colleges and engage the youth in the sessions. Any college can approach the department that is willing to reach out to the students at a convenient time and place and make students more aware about their surroundings,” the commissioner said.
Meanwhile, police personnel are also reaching out to the public on the road. For instance, the staff travelling in Hoysala vehicles speak about the importance of the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) 112. The public, mostly, have queries on the police verification process, how to get passports and other issues.
The highway patrol vehicles are spreading awareness with regard to traffic discipline. About 25 vehicles in Mangaluru city commissionerate limits are trying to engage with a group of at least 10 people. “The places are selected randomly. It could be a super market too. We talk to them for a short while. We are productively engaged in spreading awareness that will help in policing. We keep on doing our work, and are now trying to engage the public on the road positively so that the interrelationship between the public and police are healthy and it would help in the total policing process,” commissioner
Jain said.
