Bhubaneswar: Governor Ganeshi Lal’s five-year tenure ends on Monday and he is likely to continue since no announcement of his successor has been made so far.
“There are instances when governors continue in their posts for several years even after completion of their tenure. With the general elections only a few months away, the Centre may not like to change the governor for the time being,” a senior official in the governor’s office said.
Lal was appointed as the governor of Odisha on May 25, 2018 and took oath on May 29. He succeeded Satya Pal Malik. Lal, a professor of mathematics, was a former president of the
Haryana unit of BJP and served as a minister in the Haryana Vikas Party-BJP government from 1996 to 1999.
The octogenarian leader, who is known for his simplicity and friendly nature, is the 25th governor of Odisha and his tenure has so far remained non-controversial.
Lal lost his wife, Sushila Devi, due to post-Covid complications on November 23, 2020. But he did not let his personal loss come in way of his duty as he cleared the selection of vice-chancellors of various state universities on the same day.
