Facing the residents’ wrath for the past few years over the flooding during the monsoon, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has sought feedback from the public about nullahs, storm-water drains and chambers as part of efforts to clean them ahead of the rainy season.

“The PMC administration has undertaken the cleaning of nullah, drainage lines, storm-water drains and chambers as part of pre-monsoon preparation. There are a total of 433 nullahs in the city having a total length of 625 km and storm-water drains of total 260-km length. There are 85,589 chambers on the storm-water drain line. The cleaning work is expected to be completed by June 5,” municipal commissioner Vikram Kumar said Monday.

Kumar said the civic administration was appealing to all residents to check whether the nullahs, storm-water drains and chambers were cleaned by the civic staff. “If cleaning work is not complete in an area, residents should take photographs and send them along with their GPS location to the disaster management officers,” the municipal commissioner said.

The information can be sent to deputy municipal commissioner Mahesh Patil on 9689930531 and disaster management officer Ganesh Sonune on 9689935462. The contact numbers will be dedicated for pre-monsoon and disaster management work.

Over the past few years, Pune has been witnessing flooding of nullahs during the monsoon, leading to the loss of lives and property. The waterlogging of streets and resultant traffic jams have become a serious cause of concern. The PMC has to make temporary shelter homes in civic schools in case the low-lying areas along waterbodies flood.
