GURGAON: The process of centralised online admissions in government colleges for undergraduate courses is set to start from Monday.
This year, the department has made it mandatory for the students to submit their parivar pehchan patra (PPP) for admissions in the colleges. Additionally, the government has decided to restore the National Service Scheme (NSS) merit certificate weightage of 5 marks for admissions in UG courses after four years in the state.
According to data from the department of higher education, more than 60,000 students of Class 12 across the state get merit certificates in the NSS every year. The weightage system was stopped four years ago. Ever since, student unions and NSS volunteers have been demanding its restoration.
The government making it mandatory to upload PPP for college admissions has led to dissatisfaction among students.
A professor from the Government PG College in Sector 9 told TOI, "PPP data was verified by a committee of teachers but as we went to collect the data from the parents , we found they were uncooperative. They did not want to share their personal information with us. This led to an incomplete set of data."
"If the government makes it mandatory, there would be a huge number of students without a PPP, or even if they have the PPP, the documents would not contain accurate information," he added.
The colleges will start filling their profiles from Monday to Wednesday, after which the students will start applying from June 5 to 19. The colleges will start the process of verification of the documents from June 8 to 23. The merit lists will be released between July 1 and 20.
