The Crime Branch of the Pimpri-Chinchwad police has arrested four men for allegedly betting on an IPL 2023 cricket match late Friday. The police have identified the accused as Durgesh Bajranglal Parikh, 35, Shivdan Shakti Singh, 31, Savariya Girdharilal Prajapat, 21, and Omprakash Dhanram Chaudhary, 30. They said all of them are from Rajasthan.
Acting on a tip-off, a Crime Branch team raided an apartment in the plush Lodha Belmondo residential society, located opposite the MCA Cricket Stadium on the Pune-Mumbai expressway Friday night.
The team arrested the four men on the spot for allegedly betting on the IPL 2023 cricket match through a website.
The police also found that the accused had procured a SIM card by allegedly submitting forged documents, and used it for illegal cricket betting.
Havaldar Nitin Lokhande lodged the First Information Report (FIR) in connection with this case at the Shirgaon police station.
The four have been booked under sections 420, 465, 468, 471, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), sections of the Prevention of Gambling Act, and the Indian Telegraph Act. They have also seized cell phones and other items from the accused and further investigation is on.
