A 37-year-old motorist from Southport was charged Saturday for allegedly driving away from a fatal hit-and-run accident.

According to a news release from the Southport Police Department, officers responded around 4:15 a.m. to find an unresponsive female lying in the roadway. After police responded to the 300 block of East 18th Street, it was determined that the victim was struck by a vehicle that left the area. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the victim had not been released by the department as of Sunday morning.

Detectives charged Anthony Wayne Overman Jr., 37, with involuntary manslaughter, hit-and-run causing serious injury/death, failure to report accident, and failure to reduce speed.

The department is investigating the accident. Chief Todd Coring is asking anyone with information to contact authorities at 910-457-7911 or call 911.
