Ensure compensation of ₹10L to kin of girl raped & killed: NHRC
Bhubaneswar: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Nuapada administration to ensure that a compensation of Rs 10.25 lakh is provided to the next of kin of a minor girl who was raped and killed last year. Police have already arrested the accused in the case.
The NHRC passed the order on Friday after hearing a petition filed by human rights defender Rabindra Mishra from Ganjam. He alleged the 17-year-old girl was raped and murdered last year. The accused had also buried the girl, he added.
Mishra said the Plus II student went missing on January 3 last year. The girl’s father had lodged a complaint with the police on January 9 last year. But an unknown letter led to the recovery of her body from a farmland near her village in November last year.
The NHRC took cognisance of the case and sought a report from the Nuapada superintendent of police. It had also directed the DGP to ensure the report reaches the commission without any delay. According to the direction of NHRC, the Nuapada SP submitted a report dated March 27. In the report, the SP had stated that criminal proceedings have been initiated and a chargesheet has been submitted against the accused.
The report stated the Nuapada tehsildar had recommended a sum of Rs 10.25 lakh for compensation to the family of the deceased. The commission directed the district administration (especially the officers concerned) to ensure that the compensation amount has been paid to the family of the deceased.
