Panaji: The Narendra Modi government’s nine-year term has been marked by mismanagement and inefficiency, said Congress on Saturday as it accused the Centre of doing little to curb unemployment, inflation and corruption. The party also said that despite Modi’s bravado, he has failed to protect the country’s sovereignty and get back the land that China has occupied.
Addressing a press conference at the party office in Goa, All India Congress Committee’s (AICC) spokesperson Sanjay Nirupam said that as the NDA government completes nine years, it is the opposition’s duty to question the government, particularly on issues that affect the common man.
“Inflation and unemployment have skyrocketed and the economic situation has worsened in the last nine years. The Modi government has completely failed on the economic front.”
He pointed to the sharp rise in the prices of domestic gas cylinders, fuel, cooking oil, basic food items and manufactured goods.
The former member of Parliament claimed that Congress had lifted 26 crore people from below poverty line (BPL) to above poverty line (APL) but since 2014, 28 crore people have fallen back into the BPL category.
“The BJP government failed to create jobs, which it had promised. It even failed to double the income of farmers. As per records, farmers earn Rs 27 a day by growing crops. Such is the situation of farmers,” he said, adding that the farming costs have increased as the government has failed to provide subsidies.
