GURGAON: Four years after a concrete chunk of the Hero Honda Chowk flyover fell off, police on Thursday arrested a project manager and engineer of an agency that was given the responsibility to monitor the construction. The two were granted bail on Friday.
Construction of the 1.4km flyover on the busy intersection took three years and was opened to traffic in July 2017. Less than a year later, in April 2018, a concrete chunk of the flyover fell. This happened again in May 2019. No one was injured.
A case was registered on May 25, 2019, under sections 336 (endangering life) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC after a complaint by RTI activist
Ramesh Kumar. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and unnamed officials of agencies involved in the construction work were named in the FIR.
Investigators subsequently sent samples of the construction material to a laboratory for testing. Meanwhile, experts were called in for an audit and the flyover was closed to traffic for three months as a section of the structure was rebuilt.
During the probe, it was found that substandard quality of construction material was used to build the flyover.
The two officials arrested this week are from the company that was engaged by NHAI for monitoring the construction work.
“The company had the responsibility of supervising the construction. They were found to be negligent, so we arrested the team leader (project manager) and his assistant in the matter,” the investigating officer said.
He added that police have also issued notices to other agencies and officials over the case.
