VASCO: Two men from Meerut, UP, have been arrested by Goa police for firing at police at a Zuarinagar bungalow during a burglary attempt. The men, held in an interstate police operation, were also involved in recent chain-snatching cases in South Goa.
Anas Shamshad Ansari, 22, and Sajid Shamshad Ansari, 36, were nabbed with the assistance of UP police. Goa DGP Jaspal Singh announced a reward of Rs 25,000 to the team of South Goa police.
Investigators determined that the accused had used a country-made pistol to shoot at police sub-inspector Swapnil Naik of the Vasco police station. The duo’s bid to burgle the unoccupied bungalow was foiled by cops near MES College in Zuarinagar, Sancoale, on May 22. Verna police began investigating the case.
It has now emerged that the accused persons had attempted to snatch gold ornaments from an elderly woman at Loutolim on the same day. “The accused stole a motorcycle at Nuvem and snatched a chain in Chicalim,” said Dhania.
A team was constituted to nab the accused. “Clues led us to Anas. Based on his interrogation, an interstate operation was launched,” said South Goa SP Abhishek Dhania. “The assistance of UP and Delhi police was sought. The coordinated efforts helped to arrest Sajid.”
