Jaipur: Amid chaos, especially in the second half of the day, JMC-Greater in its fourth general body meeting, held after a year, approved 15 proposals related to development activities for the city.
The approved proposals include upliftment of community centres and construction of more community centres, using these centres as shelters during peak summers, issuing green bonds in the city, starting
sports academies, starting EV charging stations in different parts of the city, and construction of double basement parking at the civic body headquarters.
The meeting started on a rough note with BJP and Congress councillors alleging that mics had been switched off. Former mayor Sheel Dhabai alleged that officials were being asked to keep the mics shut so that councillors cannot speak. Councillors also complained that the mayor was not open to criticism and kept insisting that councillors must speak “only if they have positive feedback or comments to a particular proposal.”
Post-lunch when the proceedings of the House started again, within 15 minutes Independent councillor Swati Parnami said that the agendas of the meeting were being termed as visionary and questioned, “Were agendas discussed in previous meetings not visionary?”
Soon after, when Independent councillor Vikash Bareth started speaking out of turn, and said that in the House everyone was talking about the development of the entire city and not just specific wards, Parnami raised objections which turned into a fight between two groups of councillors from the BJP itself. Parnami then sat on the ground in protest while weeping. After this, councillors from Congress joined the protest and started chanting “Nari Shakti Zindabad”.
There was a scuffle between councillors of Congress and BJP who came to the well when Parnami sat down in protest. During this, the mayor adjourned the house for 15 minutes, but the break continued for almost 45 minutes.
When the proposal of building an auditorium was being discussed, BJP councillor Jitendra Shrimali said that the state government does not provide any help to the corporation. When Congress councillors opposed this, BJP councillors started raising slogans of Modi-Modi, to which Congress councillors started raising slogans in favour of Gehlot.
The meeting was adjourned at around 8.15 pm but as all the agendas could not be covered, the general body will meet again on June 27.
