HYDERABAD: A woman’s decision to make her daughter sleep in the shade proved fatal after a car driver failed to notice the child sleeping in the parking lot and ran over her, crushing her to death at Lecturers’ Colony in Hayathnagar on Wednesday. CCTV footage of the incident went viral on Thursday.
Hayathnagar police said that the footage showed a car entering the apartment complex by getting on to a ramp. The driver, after getting into the premises, took a left turn to park the car at his designated parking space. However, he failed to notice that a girl was sleeping in the parking space and ran over her. A little later, he realised that the vehicle went over a bump and disembarked to see what it was. To his disbelief, he saw that the child got crushed under the front wheel.
After enquiring, the residents established the identity of the three-year-old girl, Lakshmi. They also traced her mother, K Kavitha, a construction worker, to an adjacent apartment.
“Since it was hot during the day, Kavitha, to make her daughter feel comfortable, made her sleep in the shade by taking her to the adjacent apartment and left the girl on the floor,” Hayathnagar police said.
Policer said that the erring driver, Rama Krishna, is an interior designer. “The accused was looking towards the watchman’s room to his right while entering the parking lot. He did not notice the girl. We are also verifyihng if he was looking at his cell phone at that time,” police said.
During the investigation, cops found an SI’s cap in the car. Later, they discovered that Krishna’s wife is a sub-inspector with prohibition and excise department.
Based on the complaint lodged by Kavitha, a criminal case was registered against Rama Krishna under Section 304-A (negligence causing death) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and took him into custody. Police said that they would serve a notice on the driver under Section 41-A of the CrPC to appear before the investigating officer for questioning.
