PANAJI: Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday urged opposition parties across the country to attend the inauguration of the new Parliament building instead of boycotting it.
His statement comes after at least 20 opposition parties — which have maintained that the building should have been inaugurated by the President and not the Prime Minister — announced their decision not to attend the event.
Sawant said the new Parliament building, which will be inaugurated by Prime Minister
Narendra Modi on Sunday, incorporates the traditions of India as well as modernity in the ‘Amrit Kaal’, and shall serve the people of India for the next century.
“We have seen prime ministers in the past inaugurating various parliamentary buildings. It (Sunday’s inauguration) should be a moment of pride for all political parties representing the people in Parliament,” Sawant said. “Those who have been invited should be present at the function.”
