PANAJI: In a special drive early on Wednesday, Old Goa police arrested 10 persons for drinking alcohol in public places in Old Goa, Ribandar, Corlim, Divar, and Chorao.
Old Goa police inspector Satish Padwalkar said that police have received a lot of complaints on public drinking.
He said complaints have also been received about broken liquor bottles strewn around.
Police said that many youth sit along the river or at jetties and consume alcohol.
Those arrested for public consumption of alcohol are in the age group 20-30, and police said they will be produced in court.
Police have said that public drinking is a major menace in the state.
An officer said that tourists and even locals drink in public and disturb the peace, generate garbage, and in general, disturb the life of the general public.
In January 2019, the state government had amended the ‘Goa Tourist Places (Protection and Maintenance) Act, 2001’, prohibiting the consumption of liquor in tourist places, including beaches; the offence attracts a fine of Rs 10,000.
