About the Riverhounds

Pittsburgh currently sits fourth in the second-tier USL Championship's Eastern Conference on a 4-5-2 record (17 points). The Riverhounds' run the in Open Cup has been the highlight of the club's season, though.

Pittsburgh is 4-0-0 in this year's cup and hasn't allowed an opposition goal. After victories in the second and third rounds against Rochester and Maryland Bobcats, respectively, the Riverhounds beat two MLS sides.

New England Revolution and the Crew both fell to Pittsburgh in the last two rounds of the cup.

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds are an old foe of FC Cincinnati's from FCC's time in the second-tier. The Riverhounds were seldom an easy opponent to deal with but Cincinnati always played them well. Including last year's meeting between the clubs in the Open Cup's fourth round, FC Cincinnati holds an undefeated 6-0-4 all-time record against Pittsburgh.

The clubs also met in the Open Cup in 2018 during Cincinnati's final season in the lower division before making the jump to Major League Soccer. FCC won that match, 3-1, and advanced to host MLS side Minnesota United FC at the University of Cincinnati's Nippert Stadium.

FC Cincinnati's Open Cup run so far

FC Cincinnati's Open Cup run is nearing historic proportions for the club. A win against Pittsburgh would see FCC reach the semifinals for the second time ever, and for the first time since its Cinderella cup run in 2017.

FCC is officially 2-0-1 in this year's cup, having defeated Louisville City FC and NYCFC, and advanced beyond the Red Bulls via penalty kicks (that game is officially recorded as a tie).

FCC's Tuesday progression in the cup was one of the club's grittiest showings ever considering injuries, the hectic confluence of Cincinnati's Open Cup and regular-season schedules, and the Red Bulls' dominance in the game, which ended tied at 1-1 after 120 minutes.

What comes after the quarterfinal and when?

The Open Cup won't resume for the semifinals until Aug 23. That's post-Leagues Cup and following the month-long pause in the MLS regular season for the first edition of the Leagues Cup, which will pit MLS clubs against top-tier Mexican teams in a World Cup-style tournament.

FC Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are playing for the right to advance to the semifinal round where they would play the winner of the corresponding quarterfinal game between Inter Miami CF of MLS and Birmingham Legion of the USL Championship.
