Suspect accused of shooting deputy also faces charges in NKY, West Chester

Officials in Northern Kentucky and Butler County say the man accused of killing a deputy during a traffic stop Monday near Georgetown, Kentucky, is connected to crimes in their communities.

Scott County Deputy Caleb Conley was shot and killed around 5 p.m. May 22 during a traffic stop on Interstate 75 near Georgetown. Steven Sheangshang, the accused shooter, was arrested and faces several charges in both Fayette and Scott counties, including the murder of a police officer, according to Major Matt LeMonds, spokesperson for the Lexington Division of Community Corrections.

At Tuesday night's West Chester Township trustees meeting, Trustee Lee Wong said the deputy pulled over Sheangshang because West Chester police were trying to track him down in connection with a series of car and garage robberies in the Beckett Ridge area.

Police Chief Joel Herzog told trustees the department tracked the suspect using the township's Flock camera license plate readers in their investigation. He said Sheangshang was also connected to incidents in western Hamilton County.

"This officer died in the line of duty for some property items that weren't secure," Wong said. "He paid the ultimate price for us, for protecting our residents."

Suspect also faces charges in Northern Kentucky

Steven Sheangshang also is facing burglary charges in Northern Kentucky for a separate crime committed in Fort Mitchell. Court documents say Sheangshang was recognized on a May 17 security video stealing a portable generator from a home on Fortside Drive.

Enquirer Media partner Fox 19 reports Kenton County Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Sanders said after Sheangshang’s arrest, his photograph was released and officials realized that he also matched video of the burglar in Fort Mitchell.

The documents state Sheangshang pawned the stolen generator in Cincinnati about an hour after the burglary occurred.

Sheangshang is scheduled for arraignment on burglary charges in Kenton County June 30.

Enquirer media partner Fox 19 and Sue Kiesewetter contributed to this report.
