Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) run Indora and Shanti Nagar Urban Primary Health Centres (UPHCs) have brought laurels to the city on becoming the first Civil Primary Health Centres in
Maharashtra to be awarded the prestigious National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) certification.
The ministry of health and family welfare, Delhi, announced the results of assessment of health institutions to be certified under the NQAS on Tuesday. The Indora UPHC scored 85.2%, while Shanti Nagar UPHC secured 83% marks.
The assessment, conducted in April this year, was carried out by a national-level officer nominated by the ministry of health and family welfare. Although several primary health centres in rural areas have received this certification, no urban primary health centre in the state had got it earlier.
Dr Narendra Bahirwar, health officer of NMC, explained the evaluation process that includes 12 thematic areas based on the NQAS checklist.
These areas include maternal and child care services, outpatient services, immunization, emergency and dressing services, family welfare, laboratory, medicine, communicable disease control, non-communicable disease control, and general administration.
“As per NQAS guidelines, building condition, staff uniform, patient diet, and the work of the patient welfare committee among other things is also assessed,” he said.
Municipal commissioner and administrator Radhakrishnan B said, “The efforts of the medical officers and staff at both the UPHCs have led to this honour.”
