Flyer arrested with gold worth Rs 1.8 crore hidden in emergency light

HYDERABAD: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) sleuths of Hyderabad customs department intercepted a man from Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh for allegedly trying to smuggle in 1.8 crore worth gold on Wednesday at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.
Acting on specific information, AIU sleuths intercepted the passenger, who arrived from Dubai by an Emirates flight EK-524, at 3am. During the screening of the passenger's baggage, the officials found an emergency light containing concealed gold. Upon thorough checking, the customs officials found gold wrapped in a black cover and fixed in the battery slot of the emergency light. The estimated value of the gold, weighing 2,915, grams is 1.8 crore. The gold was seized under the Customs Act, 1962, and the accused has been arrested. Customs officials said that they were verifying travel details and the cell phone data of the accused to find out details of the other gang members.
