Kane sheriff: Man killed in shootout with police in Geneva after police pursuit that began in South Elgin
A man police believe was involved in a carjacking in Aurora was killed in a shootout with police in Geneva following a pursuit that began in South Elgin Wednesday afternoon, Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain said.
A Kane County Sheriff’s Office police dog was also killed during the incident after he was deployed when police said they saw the man had a handgun.
The man who was fatally shot allegedly stole a Honda in Aurora Wednesday afternoon, and sheriff’s deputies later spotted the vehicle using license plate readers in South Elgin, officials said.
Hain said one of the deputies initiated a pursuit that led from the area of South Elgin and ended at Randall Road and Fabyan Parkway in Geneva.
At that point, the man exited the vehicle and showed a handgun and was then shot by police, according to Hain.
The man was later pronounced dead at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva.
The investigation of the incident will be turned over to the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force.
This is a developing story.
