Television footage showed uniformed police wearing bulletproof vests and carrying shields with an ambulance nearby

Three people, including two police officers, were killed in Nagano, central Japan, when a masked man armed with a rifle and a knife attacked them. The suspect is reportedly holed up inside a building, according to the police.

According to a witness, the armed suspect also chased a woman, and stabbed her with a knife. The suspect then shot at two police officers when they arrived at the scene of the crime. They were taken to a nearby hospital, where the woman succumbed to her injuries.

The two police officers who were shot at by the suspect also died later. Another person, who is said to have been injured in the attack, has not been rescued as he was near where the suspect is holed up. 

The media footage shows armed police, wearing bulletproof vests, near the crime scene. Police say the suspect is wearing a camouflage outfit, a hat, a mask and sunglasses.

Those in the nearby areas have been advised to stay home.

No other details, including about the suspect and his motives, were immediately known.
