NCST unhappy with response of Raj officials on ‘attack’ on Kirori
Jaipur: Officials from the state government on Wednesday appeared before National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) in Delhi in the matter of the alleged physical assault and harassment suffered by Rajya Sabha MP Kirori Lal Meena and the widows of the martyrs of the Pulwama attack.
The officials told the commission that police attempted to peacefully request Kirori Lal Meena and the protestors to leave the area. As they refused to comply, police had to resort to the use of force. Meena argued that police employed excessive and unnecessary force. He also said he sustained serious injuries as a result of “police brutality” and required hospitalization.
The commission inquired about the status of the promises made to the women and their families by the authorities. The authorities reported that all the benefits outlined in the Kargil Package had been provided to the families of the martyrs. The commission requested detailed information regarding the benefits given to the families.
Police said an investigation on the incident was still ongoing. Based on the authorities’ testimony, the commission noted deficiencies in the investigation and demanded complete information on the progress. The commission expressed disappointment with the conduct of police towards Meena and the women. It emphasized that during peaceful protests like this, police must conduct itself with much more decency and dignity. “The officials failed to fulfill these promises. When the affected individuals tried to contact the chief minister regarding this matter, they were subjected to harassment and physical violence by police,” said a press statement issued by NCST.
