Amit Shah: Inauguration of new Parliament building shouldn’t be politicised
Brushing aside the opposition plan to skip the new Parliament building’s inauguration, the government on Wednesday announced its plan for a grand event marked by the installation of ‘sengol’ or ceremonial sceptre, symbolising righteous governance, in the new building and mass feting of workers engaged in its construction.
Announcing this, Union home minister Amit Shah chose to focus on how the ceremony would mark the revival of a tradition where the passing on of the ‘sengol’ would represent the legitimisation and recognition of a new regime. Asked about the opposition’s boycott, Shah said the government had extended an invite to all and “they are responding as per their wisdom”. “The event should not be politicised,” he said.
Shah said the new building was an example of the Prime Minister’s far-sightedness and a testament to his vision of creating a new India, which combines modernity with the country’s heritage and traditions.
