New Delhi: India reported 513 fresh covid-19 infections in the last 24 hours, leading to a decline in active cases to 6591 nationwide, the union health ministry data showed on Wednesday. Over the span of three years, the country has seen in excess of 44.9 million infections and lost over 531,849 individuals to virus-related complications.
Health specialists are noting that current hospital admissions predominantly involve elderly individuals with pre-existing health conditions, reinforcing the need for people to receive their booster shots if they haven’t done so already.
Researchers attribute the recent surge in cases to the XBB.1.16 covid-19 variant. However, there’s now an observed decline in cases nationwide. Thanks to the combination of vaccination and natural immunity, termed ‘hybrid immunity’, scientists suggest that current variants are likely to cause milder illness, with a lesser chance of serious hospitalizations. The government continues to urge the public to follow safety protocols, including wearing masks in crowded areas and ensuring completion of the vaccination process.

In a bid to maintain control over the situation, the Union Health Ministry has instructed state and UT governments to implement a risk-assessment based approach to manage the virus. They recommend micro-level examination of the situation on district and sub-district levels, while emphasizing the execution of effective management measures for covid-19 and ensuring adherence to guidelines.
A total of 1,09,695 tests were conducted in the past day, bringing the total number of tests to nearly 92.93 crores. The country’s covid-19 vaccination drive continues to see over 220.66 crore doses administered so far.
