A court in Pune Wednesday acquitted former underworld gangster Jayendra alias Bhai Thakur and three others from the charges under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act also known as TADA, for conspiracy to commit terrorist act in the October 1989 murder of builder Suresh Dube at Mumbai’s Nallasopara.
Dube, a resident of Nallasopara, was gunned down at Nallasopara Railway station on October 9, 1989, by a group of five to six people, allegedly linked to the crime syndicate of Bhai Thakur which was dreaded in Vasai Virar area at the time.
The investigators in the Dube murder case had booked 17 people, of whom six were convicted by the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, the trial of Thakur, now in his early 70s, and three others — Deepak Thakur, Gajanan Patil and Bhaskar Patil — under the now-repealed TADA for the charges of conspiracy to commit terrorist acts, was transferred to a Pune court.
The court of Additional Sessions Judge S R Navandar Wednesday acquitted the four from the charges levelled against them.
“The ruling of the acquittal has come today (Wednesday, May 24.) The detailed order is expected soon. For the acquittal, the court has cited insufficient evidence in the case to prove the conspiracy to commit a terrorist act,” said advocate Rohan Nahar, one of the defence lawyers for the accused.
