Despite the ongoing controversies surrounding the film one single screen in
West Bengal has started screening ‘The Kerala Story’ while most of the halls and multiplexes across
Bengal are yet to give slots to the Sudipto Sen-directed film. The conflict still remains despite Supreme Court’s stay order on the ban imposed by the West Bengal government.
However, the news of Sreema Cinema Hall from the town of Bongaon, North 24 Parganas, showing ‘The Kerala Story’ has once again kicked up a social media storm. Netizens are now demanding other theatres to follow in the footsteps of this small single screen and start screening the film. While some have backed the West Bengal government’s decision there are others who believe that it’s up to the public to decide whether this film deserves a chance or not, especially considering its stellar box office run.
There have been multiple reports suggesting that theatre owners were reportedly being threatened by local administration if they “dared” to screen the movie. ‘The Kerala Story’ continues to be embroiled in controversy even after 2 weeks of its release. While the film, starring Adah Sharma in the lead, has witnessed an overwhelming response throughout the country, it didn’t get a release in West Bengal. Theatre and multiplex owners in Bengal have claimed that the slots have already been filled up for the next two weeks since several new films are releasing.
Meanwhile, Sreema Cinema Hall has reportedly recorded almost houseful shows and the audience response to the film has been great. For the unversed, the Supreme Court on May 18 stayed the ban imposed by the West Bengal government on ‘The Kerala Story’.
