Vasco: The crocodile attack at Amthane dam in which a woman was killed has sharpened the focus on the presence of a crocodile in Sasmollem Baina lake. The reptile has been a serious concern for visitors and the people residing close to the lake in Vasco.
At Amthane dam in Wadaval village in Bicholim taluka, a 45-year-old woman died last week after a crocodile dragged her into the water.
Sasmollem lake is one of the waterbodies listed for beautification and rejuvenation under the Amrit Sarovar scheme.
During his recent visit to Vasco, WRD minister Subhash Shirodkar referred to the crocodile in Sasmollem lake. Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar, who has proposed that tourism amenities be developed around the lake, said that the crocodile could endanger people.
Speaking to TOI, a resident of Sasmollem said, “Having a crocodile in the lake is a major threat to the lives of the people. We are living in fear.” The resident added, “Imagine what would happen if the crocodile enters a house.”
The attack reported at Amthane dam has been an eye-opener for the authorities, said Deepak Chodankar, a resident of Sasmollem Baina. He added, “Officials came to Sasmollem Baina to locate the crocodile. People here have been consistently urging the authorities to catch the crocodile since it has become a threat to people and animals. We request the authorities concerned and the state government to act.”
