Amid the opposition's objection to Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating the new Parliament building, senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Vivek Tankha pointed out that the name of the Chairman of Rajya Sabha and Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar is missing from the invitation card. He further noted, “Rajya Sabha Chairman cannot be ignored. This is a constitutional objection."
Tankha took to Twitter to say, I am a member of the Rajya Sabha. I have received this invite for May 28 Parliament inauguration. I have a Q why the Chairman of Rajya Sabha & Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar's name is missing fr the card.
He added, the Parliament consist of the President and two Houses to be known as Council of States & the House of the People. This is an inaugural of both Houses. Rajya Sabha Chairman cannot be ignored. This is a constitutional objection.
Obviously, Vice President cannot be invited if Prime Minister is the Chief Guest!! Please follow the constitutional path!! President & Vice President both are indispensable for the occasion.
Invitations for the inauguration of the new Parliament building slated on May 28 have been sent to various leaders across the country including the former Speakers and Chairmen of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha respectively.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Congress and 18 other opposition parties issued a joint statement to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building on May 28.
The joint statement of the opposition parties said: "Undemocratic acts are not new to the Prime Minister, who has relentlessly hollowed out the Parliament. Opposition Members of Parliament have been disqualified, suspended and muted when they raised the issues of the people of India."
The statement further said MPs from the Treasury benches have disrupted Parliament. Many controversial legislations, including the three farm laws, have been passed with almost no debate, and Parliamentary Committees have been practically made defunct. The new Parliament building has been built at great expense during a once-in-a-century pandemic with no consultation with the people of India or MPs, for whom it is apparently being built, the opposition parties said.
