JAMSHEDPUR: In a raid, 54 illegal water connections at Sankosai and Gurdwara 'bustee' in Mango area were disconnected on Tuesday, Mango Municipal Corporation chief Suresh Yadav told TOI.
Several water pumps attached to the direct water supply lines to facilitate the illegal connections were confiscated, he added.
Yadav said, "The illegal motors attached to the direct water supply pipelines led to a fall in pressure, resulting in water scarcity in those houses which followed the rule book and did not tamper with the water supply pipe lines."
The move came after deputy commissioner (DC) Vijaya Jadhav instructed the civic body and the administration officials to initiate measures to ease the woes of the around 3 lakh residents of Mango area.
A survey by the administration revealed that only 23,000 water connections in the area were legal out of over 1 lakh total connections.
Taking note of this, the DC instructed the officials to take steps for removal of illegal connections at the earliest.
Yadav said the number of illegal connections is huge in the area but expressed confidence that after all these are removed, people would not face water crunch as complained to the DC during a recent Janata Durbar held in Mango.
He said offenders this time have been let off with a warning that repeated offence would not be tolerated and strict legal action would be taken.
Rajesh Shaw, of the Sankosai area of Mango, said after the removal of the more than 50 illegal water pumps, the water supply is much better than what he had seen in the past five years.
Meanwhile, in a directive from the administration, the residents of Mango who are having illegal water connections, have been instructed to regularise the connections at various special camps set up for this purpose in the area.
The directive said people in BPL category will get free water connection, while others have to pay. All the applicants have to produce Aadhaar cards and residential proof.
The camps will be set up at Gurdwara Road 10, Blue Bells School, Shiv Mandir, Jhanda Singh School, Mahendra Marriage Hall and Kariya Bustee Community Hall.
