CHENNAI: As many as 73 bars functioning without licences have been sealed in Tiruvallur district on Tuesday.
A raid was conducted following complaints of bars functioning without licenses.
As many as 137 liquor shops were functioning in seven taluks including Ponneri,Gummidipoondi, Tiruvallur, Tiruttani, Pallipattu, Uthukottai and R K Pet in Tiruvallur district. These shops received liquor from a unit in Kakkalur, an official said.
Following complaints, bars without valid licences were sealed at Talakancheri, Tirupachur, Periyakuppam, Tiruttani, R K Pet,Pallipattu, Kadambathur, Perambakkam, Gummidipoondi, Uthukottai, Minjur,Ponneri, Pulicat and Sholavaram.
Police said that the raids would continue even without complaints.
Tamil Nadu police have also stepped up vigil on the Karnataka border after several used bottles of liquor made in Karnataka were found in waste bins and by the roads.
Following 21 deaths in a spurious liquor case, 1,558 people were arrested and 1,842 cases registered.
Police seized 19,028 litres of illicit liquor. Liquor bottles containing 4,943 litres of spurious liquor were destroyed, and 16,493 bottles of counterfeit Indian-made foreign liquor were seized.
So far in 2023, 55,474 cases have been registered in connection with illicit liquor, and 55,173 persons, including 4,534 women, have been arrested. It also said that 2,55,078 litres of spurious liquor had been seized so far this year.
In addition, 1,077 motor vehicles used to smuggle liquor, including 69 four-wheelers, have been seized and 79 persons have been booked under Goondas Act.
