MUMBAI: A four-month-old boy succumbed to Covid-related complications on Tuesday, making him one of the youngest victims in the city during the pandemic.
The city, which reported 16 of the 39 Covid cases in the state on Tuesday, has registered 26 of the 120 deaths in the state since January. The Covid-causing SARS-CoV-2 virus had largely spared children across the world, with the 'zero to 20 age group' accounting for less than 1% of the worldwide mortality of almost seven million since 2020.
In Mumbai, a nine-month-old girl with down syndrome and heart disease passed away due to Covid in July 2022. On Tuesday, civic officials refused to divulge details of the young victim except for saying that he had developed acute respiratory distress syndrome or severe lung complications due to the viral infection.
Pune health officials had reported the death of an eight-day-old girl in July 2020, and there have been a few reports from other parts of the country of neonates succumbing to Covid. "Any death is a reminder that Covid hasn't disappeared and one must seek medical advice in case of fever and not self-medicate," said Dr Rahul Pandit of Sir H N Reliance Hospital, Girgaum.
