DIBRUGARH: The process of demolishing the 58-year-old Dibrugarh town overbridge began on Monday. Built in 1965, the bridge is located in the heart of the town near Thana Chariali on the Mancotta road.
While inspecting the demolition work on Monday, Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan said the old overbridge will be completely dismantled and rebuilt with a higher elevation so that the electrification of the railway line below the overbridge can be carried out. He said it will take two years to rebuild the bridge.
Meanwhile, two service roads have been built on both flanks of the overbridge so that people can use them for commuting when the construction process is underway. Traffic movement was diverted to the two new routes from Monday. "The Dibrugarh town overbridge was built in 1965 and it has a special place in the hearts of the people. As the bridge is being demolished, I am feeling a little nostalgic and sad. But to get something new, the old one must make way. The old bridge was constructed by a contractor named Ramdhari Sharma. At that time, one brick cost just 15 paise, " the MLA said.
