Newcastle are preparing for a transformative pre-season after surpassing all expectations this year.

The Magpies will play in the Champions League next year after a 0-0 draw with Leicester secured a return to Europe's elite.

Eddie Howe's men finished 11th last season with 49 points and were expected to finish in the top ten this year.

But the Magpies are currently third and boast the second-best defensive record in the league.

Newcastle have been one of the stories of the year and the fans are already planning trips to some of Europe's biggest clubs.

And after ending their 20-year exile from the Champions League, preparations for the 2023/24 campaign are well under way.

Newcastle pre-season fixtures

The Magpies are set to take part in the Premier League's first-ever pre-season tournament in the US.

The Premier League Summer Series is set for a change in scenery, and the Toon are one of six top-flight clubs invited to participate.

Newcastle will face Chelsea, Aston Villa and Brighton in various locations across the East Coast.

But before that, they travel to Ibrox to face Rangers.

  • Rangers vs Newcastle - Ibrox, Glasgow 7:45pm
  • July 23: Aston Villa vs Newcastle - Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia 7pm
  • July 26: Newcastle vs Chelsea - Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, 8:15pm

Newcastle transfers in

The Magpies want to sign four or five 'elite' first-team players this summer as Howe looks to improve his first XI.

Top of the list is a new left-back, and Arsenal's Kieran Tierney has been heavily linked with a £30million move.

Newcastle's director of football Dan Ashworth has also made regular checks on Harvey Barnes and James Maddison this season, with Leicester all but relegated.

However, players from further afield have also been identified, with RB Leipzig's Dominik Szoboszlai emerging as a key target.

A young centre-back to partner Sven Botman is also a priority, and Nice's Jean-Clair Todibo is high on the Magpies' shortlist.

Newcastle transfers out

There aren't expected to be too many high-profile departures from St James' Park this summer.

However, one player who could be sacrificed is Allan Saint-Maximin.

The Frenchman has been linked with moves to Tottenham and AC Milan recently, and talkSPORT understands the Toon are willing to cash in.

Ryan Fraser will also leave after the Scot was demoted to the Under-23s earlier this year.

Elsewhere, Martin Dubravka, Jamaal Lascelles, Jamal Lewis and Javier Manquillo could all move on.

Newcastle contract talks latest

The big news on the contract front is that Bruno Guimaraes is set to sign a new long-term deal.

The Brazilian international has been a revelation since moving to Tyneside, and Newcastle intend to build their team around him.

Paul Dummett could also earn a contract extension to help the Magpies deal with UEFA rules on homegrown players.

But it could be the end of the line for Matt Ritchie, with the winger's deal up at the end of the year.

Ritchie joined Newcastle in 2016 but has seen his game time severely restricted this year to just ten games in all competitions.

Matty Longstaff, Mark Gillespie and Loris Karius are all likely to move on.
