The 131-day window to exchange junked 2000 rupee currency notes opened on Tuesday with a mixed bag of small queues and confusion at some banks over the requirement of officially valid identity cards like PAN or Aadhaar, and official forms. Unlike November 2016, when old 500 and 1000 rupee notes - constituting some 86 per cent of the currency in circulation - were banned overnight, Rs 2000 currency notes continue to be legal tender for now, and the exchange window is more than double of that provided in 2016.

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday recognised the copyright held by Indian cinema legend Satyajit Ray to the screenplay written by him for his film "Nayak". Justice C Hari Shankar rejected an assertion by the family of film's producer RD Bansal that the copyright to the film as well as the screenplay belonged to them, and said they have no right to injunct the "novelization of the screenplay" by third parties on the basis of a licence granted by Satyajit Ray's son Sandip Ray and the Society for Preservation of Satyajit Ray Archives (SPSRA).

Dozens of militants attacked an oil and gas plant on Tuesday in Pakistan's remote northwest, near the border with Afghanistan, killing four security troops and two private guards, officials said. Oil production was temporarily suspended following the attack on the oil and gas extraction facility run by a multinational European company, MOL Pakistan Oil and Gas, in Hangu, a restive district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

More pharmaceutical products can be brought under mandatory quality improvement norms if needed to comply with global standards for export from India if the health ministry issues an advice in this regard, a top official said on Tuesday. Director General Foreign Trade (DGFT) Santosh Kumar Sarangi said all pharmaceutical products must meet global standards and quality requirements.

The Delhi Police has made elaborate arrangements from Jantar Mantar to India Gate in view of a candlelight march to be held on Tuesday evening by the wrestlers protesting against the wrestling federation chief to mark the completion of a month of their fight for justice. The police has neither officially given nor denied permission to the protesters to hold the candlelight march at Jantar Mantar. A senior police officer said around 500 protesters are expected to join the march.

The Supreme Court has asked the Centre and the Assam government to respond to a plea seeking directions to declare the area around Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary an eco-sensitive zone and remove all encroachments. A three-judge bench of Justices B R Gavai, Vikram Nath and Sanjay Karol has issued notices to the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the state government with regard to the wildlife sanctuary in Assam.
