Apple's first mixed-reality headset is closer than ever, speculated to debut at the upcoming developers' conference on June 5. The Cupertino giant recently trademarked the 'xrOS,' and now two more trademarks have been filed -- 'realityproOS' and 'realOS.'
A patent for "realityproOS" was recently filed in New Zealand by Immersive Health Solutions LLC, the same company that filed to protect terms like "Reality One" and "Reality Pro" last year. They established a priority date through a filing in Jamaica on May 1, as the trademark activity in the country is not yet accessible online.
There is also a trademark filed called "realOS." This term was registered broadly in Europe last year by a company called Realityo Systems LLC, which appears to be associated with Apple. The filing covers different aspects of computers and operating systems. Realityo Systems is the same entity which filed the trademark for "realityOS" towards the end of 2021.
Realityo Systems has filed additional paperwork in various countries for the term "realOS," with a description of "computer operating systems and computer operating systems for integrated circuits." It's worth noting that Fujitsu previously owned the trademark for "realOS'' in the United States, dating back to 2006, but it has since changed hands multiple times before being acquired by Realityo Systems in November 2022.
The two trademarks are unlikely to be the name for the mixed-reality headset’s software. Apple's upcoming headset software is more likely to be called "xrOS."
The name "xrOS" stands for "extended reality," referring to both the augmented and virtual reality capabilities of the headset. Apple has already trademarked "xrOS" in multiple countries using a hidden shell company.
Earlier, the software was referred to as "Reality OS" or "rOS" during development. However, the company seems to have decided on a name more specific, "xrOS '' before its launch.
The upcoming xrOS is said to have an interface similar to iOS, making it easy for users to navigate. It will have a Home screen with customizable app icons and widgets. The headset will have popular apps like Maps and Messages, redesigned for an AR/VR experience.
Additionally, Apple is developing a software development kit for third-party apps to be created specifically for the headset.
Apple also filed applications for the trademarks "Reality One," "Reality Pro," and "Reality Processor." The “Reality One” is what the headset could be called, while the “Reality Processor” would be the name of the chipset inside.
