Asian Currencies Mixed as Traders Digest U.S. Debt-Ceiling Talks, Fed Officials’ Comments

0211 GMT – Asian currencies are mixed against the USD in the morning session. The resumption of U.S. debt-ceiling talks may have spurred some hopes, but watch for brinkmanship and blame-shifting, says Vishnu Varathan, head of economics & strategy at Mizuho Bank, in an email. Fed officials’ recent hawkish comments have some effect on the markets, Varathan says, adding that the FOMC meeting in June could be an unmistakably hawkish pause with a higher bar than in May for a rate increase. USD/KRW edges 0.1% lower to 1,313.07 while USD/CNH rises 0.2% to 7.0631 and AUD/USD is little changed at 0.6647. (ronnie.harui@wsj.com
