After days of endless heat and rising night temperatures, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted some relief for Pune. The weather department recently said the city will experience partly cloudy skies from Wednesday with chances of light to very light rainfall after Thursday.

Over the last few days, Pune and its surrounding areas have witnessed temperatures hovering around the 40-degree Celsius mark. The IMD said this was normal during this time of the year. While temperatures have not been exceptionally high, the lack of a cooling effect has resulted in more people complaining of heat-related illnesses like exhaustion. Dehydration has also been reported by the doctors.

Dr Anupam Kashyapi, head of the weather forecasting department of the IMD, said: “A fresh set of western disturbance (moisture-carrying wind) is expected to get active over the northern parts of the country in the next few days. This would result in moisture incursion in the northern and central parts of the country. Pune will also receive light to very light rain post-Thursday.”

Meanwhile, IMD scientists have kept a close watch on the progress of the monsoon. “We are hopeful that the monsoon will hit the Kerala coast around June 4. Post the onset of the monsoon, Pune and its surrounding regions will receive heavy pre-monsoon showers accompanied by thunder and lightning,” an IMD official said.
