Coimbatore: The Saibaba Colony police have arrested a 29-year-old software engineer for stealing 27 sovereigns of gold ornaments from his mother's house at Velandipalayam.
Police identified him as S Vignesh, 29, employee of an IT firm at Peelamedu.
Complainant S Shanthi, 50, of Dr Radhakrishnan Street, said she raised Vignesh and his sister alone after separating from her husband 15 years ago. “I ran a fruit shop to make ends meet. My daughter is now settled with her family at PN Pudur. Vignesh completed BE and is working for a software company. He got married two years ago and is staying with his family in a rented house. He stopped visiting me after the marriage,” she said.
Shanthi said she has been working as a cook at some local houses. “Vignesh visited me on April 16 and fought with me over property. He left after a police team reached the house and warned him. I left for Varanasi for pilgrimage on May 3. A few days later, my sister Sumathi found Vignesh, his wife and parents-in-law in my house. After she alerted me, I contacted the Saibaba Colony police and a police team visited the house and made them leave.”
The estranged woman returned from Varanasi on May 12 and found a new lock on the door.
“I couldn’t enter my own house. Vignesh came the next day, opened the lock and again demanded property. I checked the locker where I had kept 27 sovereigns of gold ornaments and found them missing,” she added.
Vignesh and Shanthi had a verbal spat over the missing jewellery and he hurled abuses at her, a police officer said.
“The dejected woman consumed a pesticide and was admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. After she was discharged from the hospital, she lodged the complaint against her son, her daughter-in-law and her parents,” the officer told TOI.
Police registered a case against Vignesh under Section 380 and 454 of the Indian Penal Code, arrested him and also recovered the stolen ornaments from him.
Vignesh has been remanded in judicial custody.
