GURGAON: A second-year student of a government college in Pataudi is undergoing treatment in ICU after being allegedly thrashed by six seniors on the campus.
The youth's father alleged that his son was attacked during a ragging session. Police, however, ruled it out, saying they were probing why the students came to blows.
Three of the six senior students were arrested, but were released on bail.
Chander Shekhar (19), a BA student, had gone to Jatauli Government College on Friday morning to download the admit card for an exam of the Indian Air Force, which was scheduled the next day.
Chander's father Ashok Kumar, who identified himself as a social activist, said his son was attacked around 11am.
"On Thursday, my son had gone to Noida to take the National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) and returned home late. So, the next day, he said he would go to college only to download the admit card for an Air Force test. Around noon, we were informed that he had been attacked by a few seniors. I rushed to the college, took my injured son to the police station and then to a hospital," he told TOI.
Kumar said his son was never involved in any scuffle in college and was being ragged when it turned violent. Chander, who suffered grievous injuries near the right eye, was admitted to the Pataudi Civil Hospital, where he is under observation in the ICU.
"It is a sheer case of ragging. The senior students attacked him to establish authority over my son. He is preparing for the Army and does not get into confrontation easily," the victim's father added.
Following a complaint by Kumar, an FIR was registered against Risky, Dipu, Aakash, Harsh, Abhishek, Yogesh, and others under sections 147 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly) and 323 (causing hurt) of the IPC at Pataudi police station on Friday.
Police said they were probing what led to the assault. "We have registered a case. Three of the accused were arrested and later released on bail. It doesn't appear to be a case of ragging. There was a scuffle between two groups and one student suffered injuries," said Subhash Boken, a spokesperson for Gurgaon police.
It being a Sunday, the college authorities could not be reached for a comment.
The number of the district education officer, Ramesh Kumar Garg, was switched off. A text message to him did not elicit any response either till late on Sunday night.
