LUCKNOW/KOLKATA: A middle-aged couple from the Naktala area died in a road accident in Barabanki, about 30km east of Lucknow, early on Saturday. Subrata Sanyal (53) and his wife Paramita (45) were on a bike trip to Ladakh and rammed a divider on Purvanchal Expressway.
The couple, who had travelled to various destinations on their bike over the past few years, have two sons - Mayukh, a musician who studies architecture at a Cuttack institute, and Srijan, a class-IX student at an English-medium school in Narendrapur. Subrata was the proprietor of an engineering consultancy firm and Paramita was an interior designer
"Subrata sustained injuries on his head while Paramita was tossed in the air and fell a few feet away from her husband," said Deepak Pandey, station house officer of Barabanki.
The couple was taken to a local hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival. Pandey said the couple's identity was established with their Aadhaar cards and phones. Cops contacted their friends and relatives who rushed to UP on Saturday itself. Among the first to reach Barabanki was Subrata's friend Amitava Sanyal, who works in Delhi. "They went on bike trips to Odisha and MP earlier," he said.
The Sanyals lived on the fourth floor of a building in Baishnabghata Bylane and were known as avid bikers in the neighbourhood. "They were crazy for bike rides. Age never had any effect on their love for biking and adventure trips. While their children were busy with studies, the couple continued to undertake one journey after another. It hurts to hear they died doing what they loved most," said Saraswati Mondal, a neighbour.
Debanjan Saha, another resident of the building, said the two had left Kolkata on their bike early on Tuesday. "His son had told me they were on their way to Ladakh. The two were avid bikers and used to set off for long rides often. We came to know about the accident when one of their relatives came to the flat to take Sanyal's elderly mother and the couple's younger son to the accident spot," said Saha.
The bodies were handed over to the sons after a post-mortem, and were cremated at Lucknow's Bhaisakund crematorium.
