Nagpur: The boys and girls teams of Nagpur district qualified for the quarterfinals of the Maharashtra Youth Basketball Championship at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on Sunday.
The boys emerged pool toppers from Group A with a better quotient. The girls outfit also made it to the last 8 stage as third qualifying team from Group A. Though Nagpur girls lost their last league game to Kolhapur on Sunday, they made to the knockouts after Mumbai Suburban defeated Solapur 36-31.
Playing two league games within 10 hours took its toll on Nagpur girls as they lost their second successive match. A day after getting off to a winning start, after defeating Solapur by 10 points, Nagpur girls lost to Mumbai Suburban by three points on Saturday night. The second league game concluded at around 9pm.
Nagpur girls played final league game against Kolhapur at 6.30am on Sunday. A tried looking Nagpur team had a false start against Kolhapur as they lost the initial three quarters 9-19, 11-18 and 5-12 respectively. Despite trailing by as many as 24 points, Nagpur dominated the final quarter but fell short. Nagpur boys defeated Mumbai city 52-24 in a one-sided affair.
