Iberdrola debuts energy-saving Advanced Smart Assistant

Energy giant teams up with Amazon Web Services to deliver new AI-based smart energy management system

Iberdrola has become the latest energy company to dive into the burgeoning artificial intelligence (AI) space, with the launch of a new energy management solution that promises to dynamically reduce smart device energy consumption by 10 to 30 per cent.

Iberdrola said the technology - dubbed Advanced Smart Assistant (ASA) - allows customers to connect and control the different digital electricity solutions in their homes with the platform then optimising consumption to take advantage of the most economical hourly rates. The system is designed to adapt to customers' energy needs, while facilitating electrification and improving the sustainability of the system by maximising energy consumption at the time of greatest renewable production.

For example, the system is the latest energy management app to allow electric vehicle owners to automatically charge during the hours with the lowest energy costs for the customer or the lowest emissions in the system. Similarly, the app makes it possible to reduce air conditioning consumption while maintaining levels of comfort within the building and can intelligently manage home energy consumption to match a building's peak solar generation hours.

Carlos Pascual López, head of Energy Management Solutions at Iberdrola, said: "With the Advanced Smart Assistant, we are making progress in the electrification of energy demand and increasing the energy efficiency of our customers while helping with the integration of renewable generation."

The product follows the launch of a new global collaboration between Iberdrola and Amazon to support the development of large-scale renewable energy projects and leverage cloud computing technology to enhance digitalisation in the energy transition.

"Leveraging the cloud and innovative solutions like artificial intelligence, Iberdrola is democratising data and making it more accessible to its customers," said Howard Gefen, general manager for energy and utilities at AWS. "Iberdrola's Advanced Smart Assistant delivers the data and intelligence needed to help customers address their energy consumption and reduce costs, and also play an active role in the energy transition."
