A 70-YEAR-OLD man died while his 65-year-old wife and 41-year-old son were hospitalised after suspected consumption of a poisonous substance at their house in Pune’s Fursungi area.
Initial probe has revealed that the family decided to take the extreme step due to the financial, personal and health issues they were grappling with, officials said.
The incident came to light on Monday around 7 pm in Bhosale village area of Fursungi, located on the city’s outskirts. The deceased Suryaprakash Harishchandra Abnave (70) used to work at a photo studio in the past, police said. His wife Janabai, a homemaker and son Chetan, who is unemployed, have been hospitalised. Officials from Hadapsar police station have launched a probe.
“The police control room received a call from the family’s neighbours. Prima facie the three have consumed a poisonous substance. The elderly man died, and his wife and son are being treated at Sassoon General Hospital.
Preliminary probe suggests the family took the extreme step due to personal and financial issues. We were told that the wife is battling cancer.” Officials said that some relatives too had been trying to contact them on Monday. “The mother and son are out of immediate danger, said hospital authorities. Our priority was to ensure medical assistance. We then started investigating to ascertain the events that could have led to the incident,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Hadapsar Division) Bajrang Desai. Senior Inspector Arvind Gokule, in-charge of Hadapsar police station said, “While the mother is battling cancer, the son is under stress due to a divorce and loss of employment.”
As for the substance consumed by the family, Gokule said it was “part of the investigation. A forensic examination will ascertain what they consumed.”
